In search of new concepts of sustainable development of rural areas in the Netherlands
AbstractProblems in the relationship between agricultural dynamics and nature conservation affect the core of sustainability. In the Netherlands, this relationship has been a central issue in the successive national plans for physical planning in the last 25 years. In reality, physical planning and politics have not proved to be very successful in guiding agricultural dynamics within limiting conditions of sustainable development. From these experiences, some important lessons have been drawn which have given rise to new concepts for planning and policies for the rural areas. The concepts are as yet tentative and many questions still need to be answered.
