Design and construction of GRP sandwich ship hulls
AbstractThe development of the GRP sandwich technique in Sweden started in the late 1960s. Various types of ships have been built at Karlskronavarvet AB according to this building method. In this paper the basics of the GRP sandwich concept is outlined. Also a presentation of different design aspects is given. The latter part of the paper covers the production of GRP sandwich structures. A short description of the construction procedure is given. To ensure the production of a high quality GRP sandwich hull it is necessary to have a straightforward well working quality assurance system documented in a quality assurance manual. Much attention is therefore given to quality assurance and quality control. This part also includes a report of the manufacturing experience from the first six hulls in the Landsort series. Finally, in the last section, repair and maintenance of GRP sandwich ship hulls are discussed.
