The breakup of shore fast sea ice
AbstractRecent theoretical studies of the reflection and transmission of ocean waves at a shore fast ice boundary (Fox and Squire, 1990, 1991a) have demonstrated conclusively that it is necessary to include the complete set of wave modes in the open water region and beneath the sea ice. In this paper these studies are extended by including viscosity in the model, so that the theory conforms to the few data which are available (Squire, 1984a; Squire and Fox, 1992). Consequential changes to the properties of the ice-coupled waves are then reported, and in particular a mechanism for the breakup of sea ice plates is proposed which is in accord with observations.
