Spatial stability of average daily travel times and trip rates within Great Britain
Abstract Average daily travel times and trip rates are calculated for individuals resident in areas of differing population size and population density using data for the whole of Great Britain. Contrary to recent suggestions there is no indication from this study that daily travel time is more stable than daily trip rate. For example when the data is categorised by population size the maximum average daily travel time is 21% higher than the minimum average daily travel time while the maximum trip rate is only 14% greater than the minimum trip rate. Cross tabulations of daily travel time and daily trip rate by population size and ward population density showed no systematic variation except for higher travel times and trip rates in wards with low population density in large cities.
