An analytical solution for the transient response of a cylindrical lined cavity in a poroelastic medium
Abstract The transient response of a pressurized long cylindrical lined cavity in saturated soil is one of the fundamental problems in soil dynamics. In this paper, a cylindrical lining subjected to axially symmetric internal dynamic loads is analyzed by modeling the soil as a fluid-saturated poroelastic medium and the lining structure as an elastic material. A set of exact solutions for the radial displacement and stress of the lining and the pore pressure on its interface with the surrounding soil are derived in the Laplace transform space. Three types of transient loads, i.e., suddenly applied constant load, gradually applied step load and triangular pulse load, are considered. Using a reliable numerical method of inverse Laplace transforms, time domain solutions of the problem are presented. The dynamic response of the lined cavity is then investigated for different parameters of the saturated soil and lining, and the effect of additional mass of the poroelastic medium on the dynamic response is also examined.
Highlights ► Presented a transient solution for the lined cavity in a poroelastic medium. ► Increasing medium additional mass results in earlier reaching the peak value. ► Increasing the lining thickness can decrease transient response significantly. ► The Lamé constant of the porous medium has a large effect on the hoop stress. ► The Lamé constant of lining can obviously change responses to a constant load.
