Seismic performance evaluation of a viscous damper-outrigger system based on response spectrum analysis
Abstract The damped outrigger system, an improvement of the conventional outrigger system, can contribute to better vibration control in high-rise buildings through proper supplemental damping. Using a spectrum-analysis-based simplified model, the optimal seismic performance of single-viscous damper-outrigger system is investigated in this study. This simplified model is first calibrated by an ANSYS model via modal analysis and response history analysis. It is then used to perform numerous parametric analyses to investigate the influence of one factor on the optimal damped outrigger location and the damping ratio. Subsequently, a comprehensive dimensionless parameter associated with all the data from the previous single-parameter analyses is obtained and applied to a new set of parametric analyses for curve fittings. Optimal damped outrigger locations derived from the top displacement and the inter-story drift are finally fitted as functions of this dimensionless parameter.
Highlights The spectrum analysis-based simplified model of a VD outrigger system was proposed. A fitted equation was developed to solve the optimal damped outrigger location. Optimal locations of VD outrigger are lower than those of conventional outrigger. Optimal damped outrigger locations mostly distribute where the first damping ratio is the largest.
