Effect of citric acid on the hydration of portland cement
AbstractThe hydration of portland cement in presence of citric acid has been investigated. The results indicate that 0.1% citric acid accelerates whereas too high a dose (> 0.1%) of citric acid retards the hydration. Electrical conductivity measurements of the paste indicate that in the presence of citric acid, the concentration and the mobility of the charge carriers are decreased. Zeta potential measurements give definite proof regarding the adsorption of citrate ions onto the portland cement grain surface, and in its presence the values become negative.
