Modeling geographic Information Resources for airport technical data management using the information resources Dictionary System (IRDS) standard
AbstractThe management of geographic information resources (GIRs) continues to be hampered by problems of monitoring, locating, protecting, and controlling the complex array of GIRs found in organizations. The Information Resources Dictionary System (IRDS) standard is intended to support the definition, management, and control of metadata. This is the first investigation into applicability of the IRDS standard in a geographic information management domain — technical data management at a major airport. A geographic data model of the airport's facility alteration permit process is developed and used as the basis for deriving the schema for the Geographic IRDS (GIRDS). This study finds that no special extensions to the IRDS standard are required for a geographic information management application. In addition, this investigation provides insights into areas such as spatial data modeling, spatial relations, and GIS-IRDS integration.
