Study of conversion of 2-methylbut-2-ene using Al2O3 on alumina-chromium oxide catalysts
Abstract 1. 2-Methylbut-2-ene is converted (450°, space velocity 1 hr−1) using various Al2O3 specimens and alumina-chromium oxide impregnated catalysts with an overall conversion of 49–64% to products of skeletal isomerization, double bond migration, cracking, hydrogenation and disproportionation of hydrogen and dehydrogenation (only for AC catalysts). 2. Skeletal isomerization and the formation of C4 hydrocarbons take place at the surface of Al2O3 of an alumina-chromium oxide catalyst and both oxides of the catalyst double bond placement. 3. Overall acidity and the distribution of acid centres according to strength for alumina-chromium oxide catalysis are due to the formation of a new acid surface varying according to the type of Al2O3, the concentration of Cr2O3 and the alkali promoter.
