Investigation on some factors affecting larval growth in a coffee-pulp bed
AbstractThe influence of some factors upon larval growth in a coffee-pulp bed 20–50 cm deep was investigated to establish an adequate method for the mass production of protein-rich dipterous larvae. Larvae of two species were found to have potential as protein sources: the green hover fly Ornidia obesa (Diptera: syrphidae) and the soldier fly Hermetia illucens (Diptera: stratiomyidae). Temperature patterns in the bed indicated that both species can withstand temperatures between 22·5°C and 35°C, and the latter species even temperatures as high as 40°C. Moreover, H. illucens larvae liked to grow on a more homogeneous, more dense and drier substrate. Aeration was also found to be an important factor for larval growth.
