British garden festivals: The first eight years
AbstractThe origins of garden festivals are summarized and the way in which they have been translated into practice in Britain is examined. There is a summary of the experience of the first three British festivals at Liverpool in 1984, Stoke-on-Trent in 1986 and Glasgow in 1988 and the immediate uses and the proposed after-uses are described. The proposals for the two festivals at Gateshead in 1990 and Ebbw Vale in 1992 are discussed. Design, marketing and masterplanning are outlined and achievements and failures identified.
