Natural modes of mobile flood gates
AbstractIn order to study the dynamics of the mobile storm barriers for Venice inlets, we extend an earlier theory of trapped standing waves so that all eigen-modes can be calculated. We first describe the theory for an infinitely long barrier consisting of a series of identical vertical gates. It is found that the modal profile is the discrete substitute of a cosine curve. This finding leads to a much simpler procedure for computing the eigen-frequency from the equation of motion of one gate within a modal wavelength. The validity of this cosine profile is verified by checking the dynamic condition on all other gates. Eigen-modes for cases when neighboring gates are locked in clusters are also considered. The theory is then modified for a barrier of finite length spanning across an infinitely long channel. Different eigen-modes are found by requiring that an integral number of half cosine curves are fitted along the barrier.
