Waste disposal in coal mining—a geotechnical analysis
Abstract The disposal of waste products from coal beneficiation is a necessary consequence of the coal washing process and is thus of considerable concern to mining companies where improvement of coal quality is required. Geotechnical parameters of coal washery refuse that have been determined in both the laboratory and from field trials are presented. These data have been established over a period of about 10 years on coal refuse emanating from washeries in the Sydney Basin on the east coast of Australia. A case study is presented demonstrating the use and field performance of coal refuse in a dam on the World Register of Large Dams.
