Prediction of extremes of combined first-order and slow-drift motions of offshore structures
Abstract In this paper particular emphasis has been given to the problem of estimating the extreme values of the combined first-order and slow-drift response of an offshore structure, subjected to a stationary irregular sea-way. From the study of specific examples, it is concluded that a strong coupling between extreme first-order and slow-drift responses must be expected. Based on linearized equations of motion, it is shown that a commonly used formula for combining extreme value estimates may lead to significant underprediction. A simplified procedure for obtaining an estimate of extreme slow-drift response is also described.
