Comparison of two methods for evaluation of wave crest kinematics
Abstract Two methods for the estimation of kinematics in the crest region are compared. One, effective depth, is based on a particular physical interpretation of the Airy superposition model. The second is the well-known Wheeler stretching. It is shown here that both belong to the same family, i.e. that there exists a Wheeler stretching type computation that gives results that only differ by a second order term in η/d from the effective depth ones. Moreover, in most cases, the Wheeler stretching type computation itself is also equivalent to the common Wheeler stretching. Thus, the effective depth method sheds some light on a possible physical interpretation for Wheeler stretching, a method that is often criticized for its lack of it. Yet, it should be emphasized that interpretation does not mean justification, and that the present note does not make any judgement as to the fitness of Wheeler stretching.
