Laboratory evaluation of dry process crumb rubber modified mixtures containing Warm Mix Asphalt Additives
Highlights Compactability of dry process crumb rubber mixtures is improved with WMA additive. Conditioning for dry process mixtures should be optimized for better performance. Compaction temperatures could be lowered without compromising performance of mixes. WMA additives could also be used only to decrease the compaction efforts.
Abstract Crumb rubber (CR) usage in asphalt pavement sector is an environmentally friendly and economical solution. However, the production temperatures are significantly higher than the traditional mixtures. Thus, the focus of this study is to use Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) additives in dry process CR modified mixtures to overcome high temperature needs without compromising the performance. Effect of WMA additive on conditioning time, mixing and compaction temperatures, and also rutting and cracking potentials were investigated by experiments. As a conclusion, the compaction temperature could be lowered by 15 °C and WMA additive can be used as compaction aid to lower the compaction effort.
