The measurement of the charge distribution on monodisperse aerosols
Abstract A simple method for determining the electrostatic charge on a monodisperse aerosol consists of measuring the transmission of the aerosol through the electric field of a parallel plate analyzer, using an optical counter. An improved method of data analysis is presented which allows the determination of the charge distribution. The method was applied to 0.357 μm polystyrene latex aerosol which had been neutralized with a radioactive source and good agreement obtained with the equilibrium Boltzmann distribution. The charge distribution was also determined for highly charged latex aerosol.
