A model for optimal design of dwelling-layout system
Abstract As population increases and resources diminish providing adequate housing for all is increasingly becoming a difficult task in many countries. In this context, it is essential to achieve cost effective utilization of resources in housing development. Physical planning of layouts, engineering design of streets and utilities, architectural and engineering design of dwelling are the main components of housing development system design. In this paper, a small scale model for cost effective and optimal design of dwelling-layout system, consisting of the above components, has been developed, adopting a non-linear programming technique. Using this new planning technique, a designer could achieve, directly and simultaneously, the minimum cost, along with the desired quantitative indicators in terms of dwelling space, dwelling density, open space standard and so on; which is difficult to achieve by the conventional planning practice. Application of the model has been illustrated with example problems.
