Elastic second-order analysis for frame design
AbstractThe aim of this work is to provide a practical method for the elastic second-order analysis of rigidly connected frames. In the first part of the paper some existing approximate methods of analysis are reviewed, the formulations of the well-established geometric matrix approach and stability functions approach are discussed, and these various methods are evaluated. Finally, a simple yet practical method of analysis is proposed, based on the matrix formulation of stability functions of beam-columns. The method is tested by solving five frame examples. Comparison of the results with the exact method and the AISC/LRFD B1-B2 method confirms the validity of the proposed method and shows its advantages over the B1-B2 method. The proposed method of analysis can easily be implemented on personal computers.
