Rural land use planning — Resolving the British paradox?
Abstract The ‘paradox’ of attempting to control landscape change without effective planning powers is noted. Various measures to mitigate the impact of modern farming and forestry have been introduced in Britain, whilst existing planning legislation may also be applicable in some contexts. However, pressures to extend planning controls to rural land remain, and the desirability of this is considered. It is concluded that more cohesive and integrated landscape strategies are needed, and that these can take place, to a certain extent, within existing provisions.
