Highlights A multidisciplinary petrographic and geotechnical study for soft rocks is proposed. Apulian carbonate soft rocks are classified in six Dunham-based petrographic classes. Apulian carbonate soft rocks show weak resistance and high deformability. Statistical analyses show many links between petrography and geotechnical parameters. Petrographic features influence the physical and mechanical behavior of soft rocks.
