Hungarian farmers' perceptions of environmental problems and their attitudes to collect relevant data
Abstract To promote more environmentally friendly farming, agricultural policy has an increasing need for data on the environmental aspects and sustainability performance of farms. Some of these can be covered by existing databases or by new data collected through remote sensing, but farmers also need to provide data. Our survey aimed to investigate Hungarian farmers' perceptions of environmental issues and their attitudes towards relevant data collection. The survey of farms in the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) revealed that farmers face several challenges in collecting and reporting environmental data. The perceived environmental problems slightly stimulate the willingness to collect environmental data. However, farmers are not a homogeneous group, and their behaviour is influenced by a complex set of socio-economic and attitudinal factors. A Sankey diagram was used to represent the diversity of their responses in terms of the problems perceived and addressed and their willingness to collect data.
Highlights Farmers face serious challenges and consider environmental data reporting to be excessive. The survey has identified the areas where farmers have the most difficulty with data collection. Our approach provides a highly informative way to show the diversity of farmers' attitudes to collect environmental data. Our results can help the planned ‘Green Support Unit’ to provide targeted knowledge transfer to farmers.
