Introduction of new reinforcement for cementitious materials—Calcia/alumina (CA) fibers formed by the inviscid melt-spinning (IMS) process
AbstractVitreous calcia-alumina inviscid melt spun (CA IMS) fibers of eutectic composition (46.5 wt% calcia/53.5 wt% alumina) were explored as candidates for reinforcement in portland cement due to their inherent chemical basicity. Composites of Type I portland cement and approximately 14 vol. % of CA IMS fibers were molded into compressive test specimens (1 × 1 × 0.5 in3). Considerable enhancement of compressive strength of the composite (over twice that of the matrix alone) was observed, depending upon the surface condition of the CA IMS fibers and their arrangement. The presence of a carbon sheath on the fibers from the IMS fibers appeared to affect the overall strength of the composite.
