Analysis of the dynamic response of caisson breakwaters
AbstractA sensitivity analysis of the relevant parameters affecting the dynamic response of a caisson breakwater subject to breaking wave loads is performed by using a numerical model validated by large-scale model tests. The two basic sources of uncertainty are examined, namely the dynamic loads and their most relevant characteristics, and the structural model itself with its most relevant dynamic parameters (mass, damping, stiffness). In spite of the limitations of the model used, the results allow us to evaluate the relative importance of the influencing factors and the related uncertainties, to identify the most critical loads and their most relevant characteristics, and to obtain the range of the maximum response expected. The applicability of the equivalent static load concept to caisson breakwaters subject to breaking wave loads is also discussed.
