The relationship between soil contaminated with volatile organic compounds and indoor air pollution
AbstractThe relationship between soil contaminated with volatile organic compounds and indoor air quality was examined. Measurements in the soil and indoor air were taken in 77 houses built on different types of contaminated soil. In seven houses, the influence of soil contamination on indoor air quality was detected. Repeated measurements showed that the contribution to indoor air pollution was consistent, but highly variable with time. Statistical analysis indicated that the ground water level, the ventilation-rate of the crawl space, and the floor type affected the relationship. Model calculations for the prediction of indoor-air concentrations from known soil concentrations gave poor results.
