Curing compounds for fresh or hardened concrete
Abstract Results are reported of a series of tests planned to investigate the effectiveness of proprietary compounds for curing fresh or hardened concrete. In the first series, fresh concrete specimens sprayed with compounds were placed inside cabinets maintained at different environmental Conditions. In the second series, hardened concrete cubes brushed with compounds were either exposed to atmospheric conditions or placed in environmental cabinets. Test results on fresh concrete specimens indicate a wide variation in the curing efficienciss (25–89%) depending on compound type and environmental conditions. Low efficiencies (below 47%) were noted for 70% of the tested compounds. For the hardened concrete cubes, compressive test results generally indicate higher efficiencies (80–100%). These findings support earlier claims that the compressive test on cubes or cylinders normally used for concrete quality control purposes is not a suitable test for curing.
