AbstractThis paper deals with the buckling load optimization of variable thickness circular and annular plates. An automated analysis and optimization procedure is adopted which integrates structural finite element analysis, parametric cubic spline thickness definition, automatic mesh generation, sensitivity analysis and mathematical programming. The validation of the optimization methods is also shown by means of several examples of application.
