An approach on children's experiences of participatory planning
Abstract The aim of this study is to investigate the methodological approach based on active participation of children at every stage of the planning process, from the analysis-synthesis study and design-planning-implementation process to use and monitoring/control stage within the scope of participatory planning approach. Within the scope of this study, Bolu Atatürk Park was used as the sample implementation area, and students from Bolu Mevlana elementary and secondary schools were the sample set. In this framework, an experience process where children are actively involved were followed with the guidance of facilitator and the support of technical staff. It is thought that the research gives children the opportunity to participate in the decisions made regarding their play spaces; in describing and evaluating their environments; in constructing, creating, transforming and reshaping their environment; in gaining a sense of ownership and partnership; in making choices; and in seeing the possibilities.
Highlights The design of playgrounds in accordance with child-friendly design principles Planning and implementation process of playground areas in terms of participation of children The children were allowed to experience natural children's space during the planning and implementation process.
