Airborne outbreak of trichothecene toxicosis
Abstract A heavy infestation of Stachybotrys atra in a house in suburban Chicago has caused chronic health problems for the members of the household. Extracts of the S. atra contaminated household material proved toxic to animals; from these extracts were isolated several highly toxic macrocyclic trichothecenes. After the contaminated duct work, insulation and building material had been replaced, the members of the household no longer complained of illnesses suggestive of trichothecene toxicosis.
