Oxidation of petroleum asphaltenes to aliphatic dicarboxylic and benzene carboxylic acids
Abstract 1. During oxidation of asphaltenes with atmospheric oxygen in a dilute NaOH solution a complex mixture of compounds containing oxygen is formed, including water-soluble acids, consisting of aliphatic dicarboxylic and benzene carboxylic acids. 2. Under optimum conditions of oxidation: temperature 225–230°, pressure 65–70 kg/cm2, rraw material: water: alkali ratio 1 : 1.4–1.6 : 14–18, the intensity of agitation of the reaction mixture corresponding to Rem=5×104 air consumption−0.140–0.150./min.g, duration −2.5–3.0 hr, the yield of water-soluble acids is: 52–56% in terms of asphaltenes. The mixture obtained contains oxalic (20·1), malonic (1·7), succinic, benzoic (1·9), o-phthalic (4·3), m and p-phthalic (1·5), hemimellitic (4·5), trimellitic (5·4), trimesis (4·1), mellophanic (8·2), pyromellitic (10·1), prehnitic (15·4), pentacarboxyclic (6·1) and mellitic (0.5%) acids.
