Therapeutic lighting in the elderly living spaces via a daylight and artificial lighting integrated scheme
Abstract Many studies have proved the therapeutic effects of light, and efforts have been made toward installing therapeutic lighting in human habitats. This study proposes a novel approach to installing therapeutic lighting in elderly living spaces (ELSs) via daylight and artificial lighting integrated scheme (DALIS), aiming for therapeutic effects and visual comfort. Firstly, a set of artificial neural network (ANN) based prediction models for annual daylight distribution are developed, which are capable of real-time corneal illuminance (Ecor) prediction with high accuracy (R2 > 0.999) and stability (quartile of d-value < 40 lx). After that, a CyclicSelection Model is developed, which selects the hourly optimal artificial supplementary lighting (ASL) with a total of 3285 h per year from the designed ASL bank. Accordingly, the annual variation patterns of the ASL parameters are analyzed, and the annual dynamic model of the DALIS is revealed. In conclusion, the DALIS produces a light condition in which the Ecor ranging from 1000 to 2000 lx covers 100 % of the area of the test room for 47 % of the hours of a year; moreover, it covers 85 % of the area on average for 100 % of the hours; indicating that it can produce a therapeutically effective and visually comfortable light condition.
