Experimental studies with frozen soil in an “ice sandwich” permeameter
Abstract An “ice sandwich” apparatus can be used in a dilatometer mode to obtain data for unfrozen water content and in a permeameter mode to obtain apparent hydraulic conductivity data for a frozen soil. Measurements on a 4–8 μm silt fraction confirmed expectations of strong hysteresis effects in both functions in the range 0 to −0.15°C. In the ice sandwich mode (no soil), an imposed hydraulic gradient induced regelation and a measurable temperature gradient. With frozen soil (permeameter mode), however, the induced gradient, if present, was too small to be detected with present apparatus. In the ice sandwich mode, flow along grain boundaries in polycrystalline ice was negligible, compared to regelation transport, at −0.040°C.
