Spatio-symbolic oppositions in ritual and architecture
AbstractThis paper suggests that spatial oppositions are unique and particularly fundamental to ‘expressive’ symbolism. Such a view emphasizes the importance of spatial aspects in ritual and architecture and provides a common theoretical basis to both. Architecture has been preoccupied with its limited, communicational ability to make design statements within the architectonic medium exclusively. Conspicuously absent in theory is the unique ability of spatial oppositions to organize, structure or associate symbolic objects in a variety of media. This cultural process evokes deep emotions useful in the influence of social, political and ecological realities. Evidence will be introduced to show that a ritual or expressive view of architecture has merit in any setting, historical or modern, where we find relatively permanent occupation by some socially purposeful group.
