Differential alteration of phyllosilicate minerals under hydromorphic conditions
AbstractDifferential alteration processes of clay minerals are well expressed in the albic tongues of soils with glossic features. The explanation of these processes can be found in the reducing and acidic conditions created by the presence of a temporary perched water table. The observed phases are: the chlorite microdivision of the silty fraction, the formation of interstratified (14C–14V) chlorite-vermiculite clay which by magnesium release is further transformed into a vermiculite, and the alteration and partial removal of hydroxyaluminum interlayers of a chloritized smectite present in the clay fraction.
