A miniature cylindrical wind speed and direction sensor
AbstractA small robust system has been developed, capable of measuring mean wind speed and direction near small-scale models. The system consists of a cylindrical probe of about inch diameter with twelve circumferential pressure taps. Fourier analysis is used to find the axis of symmetry of the pressure distribution, and hence the wind angle, and to reconstitute the between the front stagnation point and the mean wake pressure, and hence the mean wind speed. Two probes were fabricated; the probe made out of acrylic performed better and was capable of detecting the wind direction to within about 0.4° and the mean speed of the flow perpendicular to the probe axis to within about 0.5% in smooth flow (root mean square errors). The probe's performance in turbulent and inclined flows was also documented and found to be very acceptable, despite some deterioration from the smooth flow performance.
