Hydrodynamic force on circular cylinders
The determination of the hydrodynamic force per unit length of a circular cylinder moving in a plane perpendicular to its axis in a nonuniform unsteady flow of an ideal fluid of infinite extent is formulated as a series expansion in the small parameter ka, where a is the cylinder radius and k−1 the length scale of the nonuniformity of the flow. Neglecting terms of order (ka)2 and higher the force per unit length is found to be in agreement with Taylor's (1928) result for a strictly two-dimensional flow in which the cylinder axis is perpendicular to the plane of flow. For the general three-dimensional case the present result is, however, at variance with the customary Morison formulation of the inertia force associated with nonuniformity of the flow. The nature of these differences and their significance are discussed in the context of the prediction of inertia forces on piles in non-linear waves.
