Stereophotography of ocean waves
AbstractA description is given of a stereophotographic technique to obtain detailed observations of the geometry of ocean waves. A brief review of some basics of stereophotogrammetry is followed by a description of the requirements of an operational system. The rapid motions of the sea surface necessitate the use of two synchronized cameras, each carried by an airplane or a helicopter. The components of the operational system such as cameras, aircraft and flight procedures are described in some detail. Quantitative information on synchronisation, altitude of photography etc. is expressed in terms of wave parameters. The paper concludes with describing the observation of a directional spectrum of wind generated waves.
