Performance of geotextile-reinforced clay samples in undrained triaxial tests
AbstractPrevious research has shown that permeable reinforcement can increase the apparent undrained strength of clay samples while impermeable reinforcement can cause a decrease.This paper presents the results of a series of tests performed on silty clay samples with different types of geotextile reinforcement which have different permeability coefficients. Woven and non-woven fabrics as well as geogrids were used in the tests.The results show that high permeability reinforcement can increase the undrained strength of the clay by up to almost 40%, while low permeability reinforcement can decrease the undrained strength a similar degree.It is also shown that the increase in strength is proportional to the moisture content of the sample because the adhesion factor between the clay and the geotextile improves as the moisture content increases.
