Factors influencing U.K. construction clients' choice of contractor
AbstractThis paper presents the findings of a survey of 53 major U.K. construction client organizations, which revealed their perceived importance of factors influencing their choice of contractors. Utilizing the relative index ranking technique and taking into account each factors' frequency as being the perceived cause of clients' dissatisfaction with contractors' performance, a weighting index was determined for each of the factors. Results indicate the five most important factors are: contractors' current workload, contractors' past experience in terms of size of projects completed, contractors' management resource in terms of—formal training regime, time of year—weather and contractors' past experience in terms of catchment, i.e. national or local. It would seem prudent therefore, that these most important factors be considered when selecting a contractor likely to perform to the satisfaction of the client on construction projects.
