Aircraft observations of regional transport of ozone in the northeastern United States
Abstract A regional-scale aircraft sampling program was conducted during August 1979 to obtain data for validation of a regional-scale photochemical air quality simulation model and for studying the physical and chemical processes important in long-range transport of O3 and O3 precursors throughout the diurnal cycle. Three aircraft were deployed in a Lagrangian sampling mode to obtain continuous measurements of O3, oxides of nitrogen, nephelometer scattering coefficient, and grab samples to be analyzed later for hydrocarbon species. The analysis reported herein is for a 24 h period during which relatively high O3 concentrations, generated within urban plumes, were transported from Ohio to the NE Corridor.
