Normalized load-deflection curves for fibre reinforced concrete under flexure
Abstract Characterization of the properties of fibre reinforced concrete under an externally applied load by conducting a three-point flexural test at constant deformation rate is a well-accepted practice. The treatment and the interpretation of the load versus load-point-displacement plot that results from such a test, however, is a subject of varying opinions and disagreements. Presently, the widely used treatment of such a plot is to obtain the toughness indices as recommended by the ASTM C-1018 and others. One problem with this method of characterization is that it is based on the concept of energy absorption, a concept not usually employed or adopted by practising engineers, who are more conversant with the concepts of load, efficiency and safety factors. With this in mind, a new technique of treating the load versus deflection plots is proposed. This technique, based on normalizing the load versus displacement plots, is simple and practical. Its usefulness in research while conducting parametric studies is illustrated through examples.
