Production function and changing technology for water transport: Some empirical results
Abstract The revival of shallow-draft water transportation in the United States during the post-1947 period is attributable to technological innovations which enabled water carriers to offer better quality of service at lower cost. Technological innovations were made in all elements of the water-carrier industry. Among the most important innovations were: (a) the power, speed and maneuverability of towboats; (b) design, size and arrangement of barges in the tow; (c) automation of many functions and adoption of communication devices; (d) improvement of navigation channels and lock design; and (e) new and improved terminal facilities with specialized cargo handling equipment. Our statistical results confirm that technological progress has been continuous, although uneven, in inland waterways.
