Fatigue life of steel notched elements including the complex stress state
Highlights The sharp ring notch under cyclic tension–compression allowed to formulate the algorithm for the fatigue life. The Łagoda–Macha energy model gave the best results for estimation of the fatigue life. The criterion of the critical plane of the notched element gave good results in energy and stress approaches.
Abstract In paper the authors proposed an algorithm for fatigue life estimation of the elements with circumferential notch under uniaxial cyclic tension and compression. In the algorithm energy models were used for local strain and stress calculation at the notch where the complex state of stress exists. For fatigue life estimation the criterion of multiaxial fatigue in the critical plane was used. Verification of the algorithm was made on the basis of fatigue test results of smooth and notched specimens were performed under cyclic tension–compression with zero mean value made of AISI: 1141 MA (AF) steel [35], described in literature. It has been shown that the proposed algorithm for fatigue life estimation allows to obtain satisfactory results with use of stress and energy criteria. In the case of strain criteria, the obtained results are different than the experimental data.
