Utilization of Agro-industrial residues in Alexandria: Experience and prospects
AbstractAbout 120 000 tons of agro-industrial residues are generated anually in Alexandria, part of which is used for the production of animal feed, soil conditioners and other uses as secondary products. However, the lack of an organized system for collection and storage and the absence of incentives for reutilization limit efficient reprocessing of residues. This paper reviews successful examples of reutilization in the dairy, starch, yeast, canning, oil refining and brewing industries. New approaches for an expanded reutilization scheme are proposed which include regeneration of spent clay, use of straw for pulping, recovery of sugar from cellulosic wastes and co-composting of industrial and domestic solid wastes.
