AbstractFew cities in the world are so well established in the universal popular imagination and yet, at the same time, so little understood as Rio de Janeiro. With a metropolitan population today of 10.2 million, it ranks tenth among the world's major cities. Few among them though, have undergone such major changes as Rio de Janeiro in modern times. It was, until quite recently, the capital and primate city of Brazil. Now, although still prosperous, it has lost both its economic and political pre-eminence to other cities in Brazil's vast urban system, having been overtaken by the pace of the nation's industrialization. Nevertheless, the resources built up during its period of primacy ensure that, as the second city, it will continue to make an important contribution to the future development of Brazil.
