A probabilistic calculation of seismic hazard of southern Spain
Abstract A probabilistic study of seismic hazard in southern Spain has been carried out on the basis of existing earthquake catalogues. The method uses quadratic frequency-intensity distributions determined for each of the eight seismogenetic sources and azimuth dependent intensity attenuation derived from isoseismal maps. The seismic hazard was calculated for each site of a 15 × 15 km grid assuming a Poisson distribution for strong events. The important new results in this investigation are that the highest hazard is found in the area of Alicante—Murcia followed by the area of Granada, with MSK-intensities of IX–X and IX for a 0.001 probability of occurrence per year, resp. The area of Alicante—Murcia is characterized tectonically by the conjunction of two major fault zones and the area of Granada by a number of en echelon extensional features.
