Urban demand and free market inflation in Guizhou Province, P.R.C.: 1984–1987
Abstract Between 1984 and 1987, food prices in Guizhou's urban and rural open markets increased dramatically. An examination of price data for 25 different commodities from 21 different locations throughout Guizhou reveals several distinct patterns between urban and rural price changes. This paper argues that these price increases are primarily caused by demand changes that originate in urban areas due to changes in the wage system and then spread to rural areas via the mechanism of the rising monetization of rural incomes.
