Soil-water interactions at the HUMEX Lake Skjervatjern
AbstractChanges in the nature of humic substances at an experimentally acidified lake are determined from titration data reduction for functional group analysis. The acidified portion of the catchment has increased in carboxyl functional groups (27 meq/g C) compared to the control (∼ 10 meq/g C). The organic rich peat on land has been depleted of acidic functional groups and has markedly increased in phenolic sites compared to the control portion of the catchment. Impermeable peats are underlain by discontinuous strata of permeable sands. The sands are modified from the quartzitic bedrock. Seeps are the only inputs to the catchment. These seeps develop in local depressions on top of the peat. Much of the chemistry and flow appear to be associated with these seeps.
