Investigations of the behaviour of reservoir-associated earthquakes
Abstract On the basis of a detailed examination of foreshock—aftershock pattern, b value, magnitude ratio of the largest aftershock to the main shock and source mechanism, the earthquakes in the Koyna region are found to differ from those of Godavari Valley and Broach, all of which belong to the Peninsular Shield of India. Similar investigations carried out for the Kariba and Kremasta regions, where reservoir-associated earthquakes of magnitude exceeding 6 have occurred, confirmed the pattern of these differences. The differences in b-values for different earthquake groups in the same region are statistically significant. The water level and earthquake frequency show a good correlation. It is inferred that the reservoirs have been responsible for changing the mechanical properties of the media, increasing its heterogeneity and making it less competent and thereby releasing the accumulated strains.
