Microseismic emissions from flowslide-type movements in South Wales
Abstract Many of the unstable hillslopes of South Wales have landslides that turn into flowslides over part of their tract. The valley slopes at Pant-teg and Glynrhigos are unstable, as they possess the optimum requirements for slope failure. They have probably been affected by repeated movements during the last 10 000 years. Significant acoustic emissions (AE) have been recorded from two landslide sites, both subsequent to a major failure (Pant-teg) and during continuous movement (Glynrhigos). Four distinct types of AE have been recognised so far with frequencies in the 1–7 kHz bandwidth with particular peaks at 1.2, 2.0, 4.2, 4.9, 5.5 and 6.5 kHz. The results indicate that there is a potential in developing a warning system for identifying increasing instability.
